Abraham Lincoln: The Poem

A Final Reflection

This has been an amazing class and semester. Etymology challenged me to read 1362 pages! When I first started this class I was not much of a reader. I was independent at most of my work and this class increased more of my skills for independency. During the course of the semester I read mystery books. Almost all of the books I read were written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. I was lucky that I could stick with his books and be able to finish all of the Sherlock Holmes books. The weekly page quota helped push me to read although most of the reading was during the last few days of the week. Most of the time when I read, i'm in a quiet room. I am not able to read and listen to music at the same time or I will get lost in the story. Every once and a while, I do talk about what i'm reading to my friends and teachers. It is the end of the semester and I feel it is safe to say I have changed as a reader. In the beginning, I barely read any books and now i'm a faster and happier reader. I think this class has made me more likely to read overall and might make me want to pick up a book during the summer although i'm not sure what yet. Towards the beginning of this semester, I had no taste for poetry, but now I believe that it is an amazing art of this language we call English. This class had me look at poetry in a different point of view than my other classes. We were able to look at poetry and analyze it ourselves weather we were right or wrong. We could even choose the poems we want to read. So yes, this class has changed my view toward poetry for the better.

The Da Vinci Code Prologue-Chapter 6 (p1-39)

The Prologue of this book is very short and shows a creative beginning. It starts with a man named Jacques Saunier who was running from an albino man with a gun. To try to protect himself, Jacques was in a museum and took a painting off the wall. This triggered the alarm and brought bars down so the albino man could not get to him. Although they were separated by bars, they could still communicate. So, the albino man ended up asking him were 'it' is. Jacques tried lying but that didn't work because three other men approached by the albino said the same and died. He ended up getting shot. The rest of these pages showed that he had a secret and did not want it to be lost with him and that he had to find a way to pass it on.
In chapter 1, a man named Robert Langdon was sleeping in his hotel in Paris when the concierge called and said that someone was waiting to meet him. Langdon thought that it was someone mad at him from the speech he gave that day, so he told the concierge to send the man away. Later, his phone rang again and Robert found out that it was the French Police. and they went to his room and asked him about his plans to meet Jacques after his speech that didn't happen. Langdon said that Jacques never showed up so he just went back to his room. After that, the Police told him that he died and the picture showed that Jacques' body was arranged in a specific way to show a symbol.
In chapter 2, we find out the albino man's name, Silas. He ends up going to his bedroom and calling a man that he calls The Teacher. He told 'The Teacher' that he had killed Jacques and that him and his three other companions that died all said that the keystone that Silas and his men were looking for was at the Church of Saint Suplice. So, The Teacher told him to go there and get it immediately. But before he left he punished himself by whipping himself. He said that it was for his sins.
In chapter 3, Langdon went with the Police to the museum. He talked about the structures there like the pyramid and also met Bezu Fache, the police captain.
In chapter 4, the captain took Langdon to Jacques body. There, Langdon finds out that Jacques was a connoisseur of goddess iconography which is the worship of the feminine. What I didn't say before was that Langdon specializes in icons and symbols which is one of the reasons of why he is there.
In chapter 5, a man named Bishop Manuel Aringarosa, in charge of a group called Opus Dei, left New York and went to Rome. When he was in the plane he took a call and found out that Silas found out that the keystone was in the Church of Saint Suplice. So, Manuel said that he would find a way to let Silas get access to the church. The rest of this chapter was about Silas past and his joining of the church.
In chapter 6, Langdon was telling Fache that Jacques arranged his body in a certain way for a reason. He also explained that he drew a pentacle on his stomach with his own blood and that this sign symbolizes the Venus goddess. They also found out that he had a glow in the dark marker and found that Jacques left a message. They had no idea what it meant and Fache said that is why they needed him. At the end of this chapter, Lieutenant Collet set up a recording system to record the conversation going on between Langdon and Fache.

His wife didn't go because of a "headache." So, when Watson was going back to Baker Street to tell Holmes what he has, he bumped into Holmes' rival detective Barker, whom was hired to find Ray Ernest. When Holmes finds out the information he needed, he told Watson and Amberley to go do an errand and while they were out, he searched the house and Barker ended up joining him. Then when Amberley came back, Holmes asked what he did with the bodies. He found out that Amberley killed his wife and Ernest out of jealousy. Holmes found the bodies in a well in the garden and Amberley was taken by the police.

He didn't see her do it before but the nurse had several times. At one point he even found a wound on his son's neck and blood on his wife's lips. When he found out, Mrs. Ferguson locked herself up in her room and only her maid was allowed. So, Holmes went to Ferguson's house and found out that Mrs. Ferguson was sick and said that she would sacrifice herself rather than breaking her husband's heart. Later Holmes found out what was happening. Ferguson's older son was jealous of his younger brother so he shot poison darts at him and his mother was sucking out the poison. Mrs. Ferguson wanted someone else to tell Ferguson because she would sound crazy.
In The Adventure of the Three Garridebs, a man named Nathan Garrideb wrote a letter to Holmes asking for help in finding another person with the same last name because he would get a lot of money. The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone & The Adventure of the Three Gables (p1193-1218)

In The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone, Watson went to his apartment and found Holmes in the bed at 7PM. He told him that he was on a trail and looking for a 100000 pound crown diamond. While looking, he was disguised a workman and a woman. The Prime Minister and Home Secretary visited him for the help in the hunt. That day Holmes was expecting someone to try to kill him so he put a wax dummy in his chair as a decoy so when it was damaged, he could catch the murderer and thief. They already had his name (Count Negretto Sylvius) but didn't know where he was. Later, Sylvius did end up coming over with one of his henchmen too. When that happened Holmes gave Watson a letter and told him to give it to a man at the criminal investigation department and to bring the police back with him. While he was waiting, Holmes tried to find out from Sylvius where the stone was. When the count entered the bedroom, he tried to attack the wax figure but Holmes went out of hiding. Then Holmes bluntly asked him where the stone was and after some manipulating, he gets him to admit he knows where it is. When he wouldn't get anymore information from him, Holmes called Sylvius' henchmen in the room and asked them by threatening with prison and went back into hiding. After some more manipulating, Holmes got Sylvius to admit it was in his pocket and he even took it out. When that happened, Holmes came out from where the dummy was and took the stone while pointing a pistol at him. Soon enough, Watson came back and arrested them and the case was over.
In The Adventure of the Three Gables, a man named Steve Dixie went to Holmes and told him to stay away from Harrow. Mary also told Holmes that a man went to her and offered to buy her house for 500 pounds more than it was worth and to also pay for the furniture but she refused and called off the deal. While she was telling Holmes this, someone was eavesdropping and opened the door dragging Susan, the maid. Holmes then found out from her that Susan talked to Barney and Dixie visited her and gave clues that she was part of Barney's gang but left so she wouldn't give information. Later, Holmes told Mary to look through her son's stuff for anything interesting. After that, Holmes and Watson went to Three Gables to see the burglary that had just happened to Mary. They ended up stealing a manuscript from he sons stuff. After seeing that he found out what happened. Holmes went to a woman named Isadora Klein and found out that she was involved with Douglas Maberly (Mary's son) and he wrote abook about the affair so she hired Barney to get it back. So to help Mary, Holmes forced her to pay 5000 pounds to her so she could travel around the world.

Behind the Hunt for Bin Laden

This is a very interesting article and amazing victory for any American. A strange thing about this plan was that they waited so long. Obama had information at least a month before and did not take that much action. Another thing that amazed me was that they recreated the building to practice the breaking in and fulfillment of the operation.

Holmes did not agree that he was the murderer but Baynes didn't care. Later, Holmes became interested in the Henderson's. No one knew where they came from and they were rich while the husband was scared of something. Holmes also thought that the note from part 1 came from him and that Miss Burnet was the writer. After that, they found out that the Hendersons had left and tried to take Miss Burnet along. When she refused Mr. Henderson drugged her with opium. My gallery response.

Loren Lau's "Gate" exhibits creative and extraterrestrial peak which promotes an imaginative feeling of the solar system from a different point of view. Lau created her image using the uncommon technique of spray paint. The positioning and sizes of the planets creates an idea of how small we as humans really are. The rocky arch acts as a window that allows the viewer to wonder what is really on the other side. Loren's vivid and colorful creativity attempts to stand out of the pieces of art around it. It is the piece de resistance of the gallery and should have been more recognized.

Sherlock Holmes His Last Bow: Part 1 The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge:The Singular Experience of Mr. John Scott Eccles (p1019-1030)

This book is one of Doyle's short story books. Part one begins with a man named John Scott Eccles who went to Holmes' apartment to discuss something. But when he showed up, so did Inspector Gregson and Inspector Baynes. They wanted a statement from Eccles because a man who was killed the night before had a note saying that Eccles would be at his house. He had no idea that Garcia was killed and said that he was at his renting house and when he woke up, there were no servants or even Garcia in site. The last time he saw him was one o'clock the night before. Eccles also said that Garcia was being distracted by something and his mood became darker when a servant handed him a note. So, when he woke up the next day, he decided to leave and found out that his stay was payed for. Holmes deduced that Garcia set the clocks to get Eccles to sleep earlier so he thought it was one o'clock which was the time of Garcia's death. From all the information given, Holmes found out that the murderer lived next to Wisteria Lodge (where Eccles was staying) in a big house.

This is a really cool video about how rock band might be in the future. This guy makes some really interesting videos. Whoever sees this post should check out his channel.

Sherlock Holmes The Valley of Fear Part 2 Epilogue (p1016-1018)

In the Epilogue a friend named Cecil Barker that Birdy made went to Holmes' apartment and told him that Birdy had been killed while they were going to South Africa. Barker had also gotten a telegram from Birdy's second wife that her husband has been lost overboard but nobody knew what happened. The Holmes said that he believed that Professor Moriarty had him killed and thats how part one and part two connected in this book.

I believe that Doyle wrote this book strangely and confused me a little wondering how and why he would write part two the way he did.....Well he is a Victorian Poet.........

Sherlock Holmes The Valley of Fear Part 2 The Scowerers Chapters 1-7 (p958-1016)

I am also going to summarize the entire Part 2 into one post because it is short. These chapters start in a train going to Vermissa Valley. Inside, a man named Mike Scanlan caught the attention of another person also riding who has a revolver. His name was John McMurdo and he was from Chicago and part of a "club" called the Eminent Order of Freemen. It was ironic that Mike was also part of that order. Later on the train, McMurdo argued with police men on the train and Scanlan told him to go and see Bodymaster McGinty at Jacob Shafter's boarding house once he reached town. At town, McMurdo fell in love with Jacob's daughter, Ettie Shafter but found out that she was already with another man of the "club". She also did love him back but was afraid what would happen if she broke her relationship with the other man named Ted Baldwin. After that, he went to the Bodymaster McGinty and said that he had made counterfeit money before he killed his partner and went to the coal mine region. McGinty liked what he heard and decided to keep him in the Order. Later, McGinty told Ettie that she could choose who she loved more because they were both from the same Order and McMurdo then did some criminal activities. When he returned he gave her a 6 month deadline to know the answer. After some time, the order got some intel that a detective agency was sending a man named Birdy Edwards to investigate their activities. So, McMurdo offered to lure him into his house while other members waited there. While they were waiting, McMurdo walked into his house and announced that he was Birdy and arrested them. Also, Ettie ended up getting married to him and they ran to California. People attempted to murder him several times but failed and soon his wife died of sickness. So, he went to England and married his second wife while asking Holmes what to do. Holmes' advice was to tell him to leave England

Metal Pen with Level and Screwdriver

http://www.neatorama.com/2011/04/17/metal-pen-with-level-and-screwdriver/
This is a really cool pen that just came out. I think if anyone would want to get it, they would actually use it. It is a very good idea and $15.

Sherlock Holmes The Valley of Fear Part 1 The Tragedy of Birlstone Chapters 4-7 (p922-958)

In chapters 4-7 Part 1 of this story is completed. I am summarizing all the chapters into the same paragraph because not as much happens in them and they are short. So, in these chapters, Holmes, Watson, and the inspector found a bloody footprint on the window still and from that they deduced that the killer had jumped through the window. The only problem was that they could not find anything outside the window or hear any stories about him. Later Holmes found out that one of John's dumbbells were missing which could mean that the murder took it. But Holmes had a hunch that it was in a moat next to the building and fished until he found it. He also discovered that it was weighing down clothes. So, he put everything back where it was and told Douglas' butler Barker that he was draining the moat for evidence and hid the rest of the night to find that he had taken the clothes. Then McDonald accused him of the murder but Mrs Douglas stopped him and pressed a button to open the fireplace. Behind that fireplace another man named John Douglas. He explained that he was part of a gang and they had the same brand which made them look so similar. He said that a man named Ted Baldwin was trying to kill him and they struggled until Baldwin accidently shot himself in the face. Barker was involved because Douglas needed his help to put his clothes on Baldwin to make it seem like he is dead and the clothes in the moat were Ted's.

Sherlock Holmes The Valley of Fear Part 1 The Tragedy of Birlstone Chapters 1-3 (p900-921)

In chapters 1-3, Holmes got a letter form an informant who's name is Fred Porlock. He is part of a criminal organisation and wrote the letter in numeric code. So, Holmes decoded it and it said that a man named John Douglas was about to be murdered. Then they contacted inspector MacDonald of Scotland Yard and he was amazed when he saw the letter because John Douglas had just been killed in Sussex. After that, MacDonald wanted to know who the man was that predicted the crime but Holmes did not know. All he does know is that he works for Professor Moriarty. So, all three of them decided to go to Sussex, meet inspector White Mason, and begin the investigation. Before the murder, the house had at least five people in it. There is also a moat around the house that is 2-3 feet deep. The body was very strange. He had a strange band on his hand with a circle and triangle inside it. He was shot in the head at close range and his wedding ring was missing. There was also a card next to his body that said VV 341?

The Hound of the Baskervilles Chapters 14-15 (p884-899)

In chapter 14 (The Hound of the Baskervilles), Watson and Holmes went quietly without being seen to Merripit House with Sir Henry and Mr. Stapleton there talking over coffee. Then Mr. Stapleton went to an outhouse and Sir Henry started walking home in the fog. Then Holmes and Watson heard the Hound but did not see it until it got out of the mist. When they did see it, it was a huge fire breathing beast which was described by the myth. So they shot it and it collapsed. They found out that the animal was a bloodhound-mastiff mix as big as a lion and covered with phosphorous so it would glow. Then they went back to the house and saw that Mrs. Stapleton was tied and gagged. When she woke up she told Holmes where her husband's hiding place was. But because the fog was too thick they just headed back to Baskerville Hall with Sir Henry. The next day they went to the spot but could not find Stapleton but they did find where he kept the hound and the phosphorous that scared Sir Charles to death.
In chapter 15 (A Retrospection), Holmes and Watson went back to London and retold what had happened to Henry and Mortimer. After being told, they decided to go on vacation to calm their nerves.

Tuesday Action List

Pharell Williams' Home's white balcony and manikin filled rooms introduce a complexity of unusual and 'rich' desires. His enormous mansion and unusual piano suggests a free willed life. The aqueous pool and diversified plants expresses Williams' pleasant architectural taste. The uniquely curved wooden stairs also creates an attractive feeling for it. The large 'Family Guy' pictures hanged on the wall implies his taste for Seth MacFarlane's work. Pharell's showing of the miniature sized red chair with a shape of human feet as the legs depicts a disturbing thought for the purchaser's imagination. His sticker infested suitcase reveals his taste for travel and exploration.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Chapters 10-13 (p851-884)

In chapter 10 (Extract from the Diary of Dr. Watson), Watson was wondering about the Hound and where it would live. Later Sir Henry was arguing with Barrymore about his brother Selden' crimes. But Barrymore said that he will not commit anymore crimes and will leave as soon as the first ship for South America came. So, Henry and Watson agreed and Barrymore told Watson that before he died, Sir Charles went to the gate to meet a woman and his wife discovered a letter with the initials LL about a late night meeting.
In chapter 11 (The Man on the Tor), Watson left Henry and went to go meet Laura Lyon (LL) and she admitted that Sir Charles supported her with money and that she wrote to him once or twice. When Watson wanted to know more she said that she wasn't very involved with him and that Stapleton told them about each other. She also said that the letter was for Sir Charles to get her out of a bad marriage and that she had got help from someone else now. So when Watson was going home he saw Mr Frankland and they had wine together. But while they were drinking, they saw a boy at the moor. So Watson left and tried to follow him and found his hut with a note that said that he had gone to Coombe Tracey. Then he heard footsteps around him and someone greeted him.
In chapter 12 (Death on the Moor) and chapter 13 (Fixing the Nets) Watson recognized the voice and quickly found out that it was Holmes. What he was curious about is how he found the hut. So he sad that he saw Wastsons cigarette brand on the floor. Holmes later told Watson that after some investigation, he found out the Stapleton seduced Laura Lyons and used her to lure Charles onto the moor to die. So they visited Laura again but while going there, someone screamed on the moor and the convict was there with Barrymore's clothes and thats why he was killed by Stapleton's dog. Then Stapleton came and asked who it was and found out who it was and explained why he was there. Stapleton invited him to come over. At the end of the chapter, Stapleton went home and Holmes and Watson went home. On their way, they were talking about what to do with Stapleton because he clearly looked guilty but Holmes said to wait to arrest him because there was no good proof for his conviction. Holmes also had a plan and told Sir Henry to have his dinner with Stapleton and not invite them. Later they went to Laura Lyon's home and told her what happened. Then Laura told the truth of what really happened. Stapleton offered to marry her if she got her divorce and he wrote Lura a letter and told her to miss the appointment scheduled and told her to not tell anyone.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Chapters 7-9 (p823-851)

In chapter 7 (The Stapletons of Merripit House), its the next morning and Watson and Sir Henry were talking about the crying they heard the other night and when they were saying that the butler was acting different. Later Watson went to the Barrymore residence to see if his telegraph was delivered and found that it was. But on his walk back a man named Mr. Stapleton was carrying a butterfly net and went up to Watson to walk with him back. During the walk Stapleton was trying to get Watson to talk about the case but he refused. While walking they also saw a stretch of quicksand where something that was a man or beast was being sucked up. They also saw a pony in the sand. After that, they heard a moan and the locals thought that it was the Hound of Baskervilles. When that happened, Stapleton chased a butterfly and went away for a while while his sister came out of nowhere and the chapter ended with Watson being very confused.
In chapter 8 (First Report of Dr. Watson) and 9 (Second Report of Dr. Watson), Watson announced that he would start to tell the story in letter form to Holmes. In these letters he goes to meet with a man named Mr. Frankland. He was interested in astronomy and had a telescope. Later, while he was sleeping, Watson woke up from the sound of footsteps and eventually heard a key turning. He did not try to solve the mystery but only left it to Holmes to find out from the letters. Later Watson theorized that Barrymore was having a relationship with another woman other than his wife and that would explain his wife's crying. So he stayed and watched to see if he would commit the act again. On the second night of the stakeout, Watson followed Barrymore to his window and found out that the Barrymore's were both feeding and housing Ms Barrymore's brother who is a convict. So, when Watson and Sir Henry were going back home they saw a figure in the distance and then it quickly disapeared.

Action List: 3.29.2011

1. Of the students shown from Patrick Henry High School I think that i would mostly relate to Zach Peterson. He wants to become a microbiologist and help find the cure of diseases such as cancer. One of the more interesting students shown is Salome Zamora. He wants to become a marijuana baker. It seems weird that anyone would want to do that. I guess it just goes against some of my ethics. I think that one of the more deluded students would be Tri Le because he is showing a typical aspiration and just doing exactly what is expected.
Ten years from now I would see myself in a completely different situation then I am now. I know I want to be in the medical field but am not sure which occupation to choose from. To most people a doctor would be typical but I am leaning more toward a biologist or something of that sort. But for now I am undecided which job to take and aspire toward.
2. In the article "A soccer Phenom Puts the 'I' in Team" Indi Cowie seems very competitive but still urges on to be different in what she does. Instead of playing her sport normally, Indi practices different tricks to "wow" her audience and make them want more. Because she does this and puts all the attention on herself, Indi has not made herself very popular in her school. Some of the students might even be jealous. One of the students at Indi's school named Allison Lynch said "Indi’s an under-the-radar flier, not one of these alpha females strutting around school like a peacock." So I guess in a normal environment at school she is not as 'alpha' but it seems to me that during a soccer game she wants all the attention. The author of this article also said that "Cowie sees herself as belonging to a world where legendary attackers like Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are celebrated for their talent and, yes, their selfishness." From this sentence you could also see that she looks up to the soccer superstars of today and probably even wishes to be like them when she gets older. Indi's mother even said that the environment become too "toxic" and that there is "so much jealousy." This is a very interesting article and gives me inspiration to do something like her.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Chapters 4-6 (p801-823)

In chapter 4 (Sir Henry Baskerville) Mortimer and Henry Baskerville arrived at Holmes' apartment. Henry told Holmes that when he arrived in London, he received a letter at his hotel telling him to stay away from the "moor." From this letter, Holmes was sure that someone was following him and the writer was using a hotel pen and newspaper clippings to write it. Henry was then asked about anything strange that happened to him and he replied that when he went to shine his shoes, someone stole one. After that, the men left and Holmes rushed to find who might be following Henry and he found him staking out in a cab but once he spotted Watson he left. From the cab, all Holmes was able to observe was the number 2704.
In chapter 5 (Three Broken Threads) Holmes went to Henry's hotel and had a hunch that the thief of the boots was involved in the case. Henry also announced that he was going to Devonshire and Holmes told him that he might need a bodyguard and told Watson to accompany him. Then, as he was getting ready to go, Henry's shoe reappeared. Holmes also suspected that a man with a full black beard was there and found out that a man named Barrymore fit that description. At the end of the chapter they contacted the cab company and found that one of the men called himself Sherlock Holmes and directed a driver.
In chapter 6 (Baskerville Hall) Watson and Henry leave. At the train station they meet police officers looking for and escaped fugitive but after some talking they finally get to Baslkerville Hall. At the hall Barrymore announced his intention to start a business with the money he inherited from Sir Charles's death.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Chapters 1-3 (p781-800)

For a while not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has written short stories on a variety of mysteries. Out of his complete collection The Hound of the Baskervilles is his third long story with actual chapters. In chapter 1 (Mr. Sherlock Holmes) Sherlock Holmes and Watson are in their office at their apartment when Watson sees a cane on the floor that does not belong to either of them. This means that someone else was there once. So, Holmes lets Watson theorize about it for some time. His theory was that an old doctor was awarded that cane after years of good work. After Holmes listened to Watson, he also gave what he believed the origin of the cane is. He said the the cane is a practitioner's and given to him for a retirement gift and that he owns a dog. Then he said that the man he described looks like the same person at his front door. So, the man came in and his name was Mortimer and everything Holmes said was true and he told Holmes that he had a problem that he needs help with.
In chapter 2 (The curse of the Baskervilles) Mortimer showed Holmes and Watson a manuscript that tells about the myth of the Baskerville curse. The curse was brought upon because of a man named Hugo Baskerville who made a deal with the devil to have help to find a girl that ran away after he kidnapped her. So, Hugo ended up killed by a beast and that beast has haunted the Baskervilles since. Then Mortimer told that the beast had just killed Sir Charles Baskerville.
In chapter 3 (The Problem) Mortimer told Holmes that he wanted to know what to do with Sir Henry, the heir to Charles. So, Holmes told him to bring Henry and began to smoke. Later that night Watson went back to Holmes with a map of the Baskerville moorlands and they talk about the case for a short period of time. Then, to end the chapter, Holmes played his violin.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Second Stain (p761-780)

The Adventure of the Second Stain is the last of the series "The Return of Sherlock Holmes." In this two very important men went to Holmes for help. Lord Bellinger, who is the Prime Minister, and Trelawney Hope, who is the Secretary of State for European Affairs went to him because someone had stolen a document from Hope's dispatch box. This document is very important to them because it is possible that if reveled, war will come about. Hope told Holmes that it disappeared from his house when he left for four hours but the strange part was that no one knew he had it. So to try and solve this case, Holmes went to some spies for help but he found out that one was murdered. Next, Inspector Lestrade called Holmes to look into the murder because he saw that the murdered man bled on the floor and drugget but stain was not there. Then out of pure luck, Holmes pulled the carpet and found a hiding place for documents except it was empty. Then he found out where it was put. He went to Hope's house and to Lady Hilda to get her to confess to what she did but because Holmes did not want high action to happen, he helped her put the doc. back into the dispatch box and when Hope checked it he saw the document.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of The Missing Three-Quarter & The Adventure of The Abbey Grange (p727-743)

In The Adventure of The Missing Three-Quarter, a man named Mr. Cyril Overton went to Sherlock Holmes for help in finding a man who disappeared named Godfrey Staunton. He is the best player on Overton's rugby team and without him they will lose. Before he could not be found, Staunton was visited in his hotel by a man with a note and when he read the note, Staunton left. Since then, he was no where to be found. Later Holmes went to the hotel and found the man who had the note. He was also worried and his had was shaking when he gave Staunton the note. Holmes then looked through the telegrams that Staunton made and found that there was at least one other person involved with him. After that he went to the telegram office and found that Staunton was addressing the letters to a man named Dr. Armstrong and he decided to visit him. When he did, Holmes asked some questions and then showed one of Staunton's papers to him. After that Armstrong was mad and kicked him out. Later when Holmes investigated more, he followed the doctor and found that Staunton was there and so was his wife who has died over tuberculosis.
In The Adventure of The Abbey Grange, Holmes woke up Watson and went to a murder scene. The man that was murdered was Sir Eustace Brackenstall. Lady Brackenstall said that at 11 o'clock she walked around the house and saw a man who had just climbed in with two younger boys and they knocked her out. When she woke up Sir Eustace went into the room and ran at the men and they killed him. After it was found that the men shared some wine and took a silver plate. One of the investigators there thought that the men were the Rangdal gang and Holmes was annoyed that the case was already solved so he went back home with Watson. But at one of the stops, Holmes decided to go back and Holmes had been sure that the gang were not there. After investigating more, he found the height of the murderer and wrote a letter to find a sailor then went back home. Later the inspector went back to Holmes' house and told him that the gang had been caught. The sailor also showed up at his residence and was surprised to not be arrested. All Holmes wanted was to know what happened so he told him. The sailor loved Lady Brackenstall and when Sir Eustace found out, he attacked him so the sailor defended himself and ended up killing him. Once Holmes heard all he wanted, he let him free but then the sailor gave himself up and faced trials.

AT&T bought T-Mobile for $39 billion!!

Breaking News!!! AT&T is buying T-Mobile USA. This is good and bad for many reasons. For one AT&T has created a bad reputation over a number of years with their dropped calls and it is unexpected so far if this purchase will help. The good news is that AT&T will now be the countries largest cell phone provider by allot. By buying this company, they will also have a much broader coverage and have 95% of Americans on their network. There is also a high chance that the cell phone bills will now be much lower for people who are in contracts with them. All in all I really hope good comes from this.

Country Boys

On Friday, our class watched the movie "Country Boys" and noticed their language has an understandable but slightly different diction. Throughout this movie one of the main characters named Chris gave a few examples showing how the word choice is used because he lives in the south. He said "Allot of people have thought that you was nothing but a failure" while in Indiana, and average person would say "Many people think that I am a failure." He also went on to say "Everyone thinks him stupid because how he speaks" when a Hoosier would say "Everybody thinks that he is stupid because of the way he speaks" The sentence structure that is used in these sentences have a sense of slang in them with the integration of simple words.
There are many reasons Chris might have this poor diction. As seen in the movie, he is poverty stricken and in a poor society. He has also been put into a poorly structured school system and is given a seventh grade education while he should be acquiring a high school education. His family members have also lived through similar experiences and because they raised him, Chris was taught a poorly developed diction.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Three Students & The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez (p696-727)

In The Adventure of the Three Students, Sherlock Holmes is in a university town and a man named Mr. Hilton Soames went to him with a problem. His problem was that someone was in his hffice and looked at the exam he was going to give. He said that he left for tea and when he got back, his door was unlocked with a key in it and the tests were moved. Soames found out that his servant Bannister went to his room to look for him andSoames wanted to find who did it because the tests are for scholarships and only three people are taking it. The names of the students are Daulat Ras, Giles Gilchrist, and Miles McLaren. So, Holmes went out to find out about them and visited them. Then on the day of the exam Holmes found out what happened. Gilchrist was the only person that knew the exams were in the room and he confronted him. So, Gilchrist told Soames that he would not take the exam and go to South Africa where he used to live.
In The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez, a man named Inspector Stanley Hopkins went to see Holmes to tell him about a murder. The man that was killed was Willoughby Smith. He doesn't have known enemies, and a good background. Hopkins did not know why anyone would want to kill him. The maid also said that Smith's last words were "the professor-it was she". The weird part about this is that the professor is a man not a woman. There was allot of evidence but so far no one to accuse. Later, they found out that the murderer entered Smith's study from the back door from some footmarks. Then they saw that Smith's hand had a pair of glasses in them. From that pair Holmes found out that the murderer is a woman, has allot of money and has been to the eye doctor a couple time recently. After some more investigating and a visit to the study again, Holmes found the woman he described hiding in a bookcase. She said she didn't mean to kill Smith and was trying to get some documents. So, to get out of trouble the woman named Anna committed suicide.

Let Kids Rule the School

This is a very interesting article by the New York Times which presents some good ideas and approaches to take with education. This school's school within a school might just work here. As having school with this school on top could help students learn more with more freedom. If we have this school there might also be the problem with some students that still will not give any effort. So, flaws will always exist but its a good idea

V for Vendetta in Kinetic Typography

This is a very weird passage from V for Vendetta. THERE ARE SO MANY WORDS THAT START WITH THE LETTER V!!

The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton & The Adventure of the Six Napoleons (p667-696)

In The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton, a woman named Lady Eva Blackwell hired Holmes to get letters from a blackmailer named Milverton. When Holmes went to him, Milverton wanted 7000 pounds to give the letters because he knew they would break Blackwell's engagement. So, Holmes attempted to bargain with him, but he would not accept any less than 7000. When that happens, Holmes promises to get the letters back by doing anything he can. So, he disguised himself as a plumber and went to Milverton's home to learn some information. Eventually, Holmes found out where he was hiding the blackmailing papers and goes back one night to try to steal them but fails but while he was there Mrs. Blackwell also entered the room as a supposed maidservant and shot Milverton. By the end of the story, Holmes found out that she was getting revenge on Milverton because her husband died because he reveled her secrets and he was brokenhearted. At the end Holmes got out of the house without being seen and the next morning he was contacted by the inspector for help in the same case he was involved in.
In The Adventure of the Six Napoleons, Inspector Lestrade went to Holmes with a problem about a man who shattered plaster busts of Napoleon. The next day another bust happened but along with them, there was a murder. So to solve this case, Holmes tries to mislead the villain by putting false information in the paper. Later, Holmes found the shopkeepers that sold the busts and found out who they sold them to. There was also a picture found in the murdered man's pocket and the shopkeepers recognized him as a former worker named Beppo. After that, Holmes went to the manufacturers of the busts and found that there were part of a six. The police also identified the murdered man and found that he was part of the Mafia and wound up dead trying to kill someone. Holmes then predicted where the next bust would be and found Beppo there. After Beppo was caught, Holmes bought the remaining busts and broke them finding a gem.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Priory School & The Adventure of the Black Peter (627-667)

In The Adventure of the Priory School, a man named Thorneycroft Huxtable went to Holmes and asked him to go to Mackleton with him to investigate a kidnapping of one of the children in the school he is a principal of. The child that was kidnapped was a ten year old boy named Lord Saltire, and his father put a big reward out for anyone who can find him. Another boy named Heidegger was also missing and he took his bike with him. So, Mr. Huxtable told Holmes all the information he knew and he agreed to go back with him to Mackleton. Later in the story, the police found Lord Saltire's hat with gypsies and locked them up even thought they said that they had found it on the floor. By this time, Holmes found where Heidegger's bicycle tracks ended and he also found him dead next to them. After some investigating, Holmes finds out that Lord Saltire's father wrote him a letter to leave the school and hide because he was being threatened. The Lord's father was being threatened by his other son, James Wilder, who was born out of wedlock. Wilder threatened to kidnap Saltire if his father did not change his will. At the end they caught Wilder and he was allowed to leave and go to Australia. This is not my favorite of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Also this family has some problems that should have been resolved earlier.
The Adventure of the Black Peter is somewhat better than the previous story. It starts with a police detective named Stanley Hoplins going to Holmes for help in a case he is in. Peter Carey was murdered with a harpoon. This man was very violent and had such a bad reputation that his daughter was happy when he died. He is a salor and lived away from his family in an outhouse and was harpooned there. The only witness of the crime was a stonemason named Slater who said he saw the shadow of someone in the window. At the scene of the crime Holmes found a notebook that was initialed C.P.R.. Holmes later found out that it was most likely a stockbrokers. He also finds out that someone tried to break into Carey's cabin but did not succeed. So he predicted that the burglar would come back and as predicted a man named John Hopley Neligan decided to break in. When they caught him, Neligan told them that he had nothing to do with the murder and was looking for clues to find his lost father. Holmes believed him but kept him in contact and later found the real killer. He was a sea captain named Basil. At the end all three of these characters were involved together in some way and Neligan was released because his father was involved not him.

"Up" FOR REAL!!!!!

Have you ever seen the movie up! Well if you have, National Geographic has done what was thought to be impossible. This is a clip of their new show "How Hard Can It Be?". In this clip the cast actually created a 16 by 16 wooden house and installed hydrogen balloons to the center. It is very interesting and a must see for anyone. http://gizmodo.com/#!5779676/the-video-of-the-real-life-up-house-flying-away

After some time Woddley tried to get closer to her and eventually tried to marry her but she rejected him. She also told Holmes that when she would ride her bike to the train station to see her mother, a man would follow her. After he heard the story, Holmes sent Watson to the city Miss Smith was in but he didn't find out anything new. Monday!!!

Today is the first day back at school after our four day break! This day was not a normal day. During school all juniors and seniors were called to the auditorium to listen to a speech by two leaders of the Civil Rights movement. This was not the only unique feature. I also wore my new glasses to school. I am very happy that I can now see words of the board more clearly.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Norwood Builder & The Adventure of the Dancing Men (p575-612)

The Adventure of the Norwood Builder is the second story that Doyle has to offer in the Return of Sherlock Holmes. This starts with a man by the name John Hector McFarlane. He is a lawyer who had been accused of murdering one of his clients. The person that was murdered was Jonas Oldacre. John told Holmes that Jonas hired him to write his will. The weird part about this will is that Jonas wanted to give John everything he had. So, John went to Jonas' house to write the will and put all the papers in a safe at the house. He stayed there late and went to an inn after. The next morning John found out in the paper that Jonas was murdered and the police were looking for him. There was a massive amount of evidence against John and did not know what to do. So, when he went to Holmes he began his own investigation. Later in the story Holmes found out that John's mother was once engaged to Jonas but then left him. Homes then talked with the house keeper and found that she knew information. Later in the story, Holmes solved the case. To prove it, he set fire to the house and Jonas, who was thought to be dead, ran out. At the end of the story they found out that Jonas was trying to have revenge on John's mother.
In The Adventure of the Dancing Men, a man named Hilton Cubitt went to Holmes for help. He gave him a piece of paper with pictures of dancing stick figures. He told Holmes that the men had a meaning to his wife and that they continuously reappeared. Mr. Cubitt's wife had a scared look on her face when she saw them but would not tell her husband why. So, Holmes told Mr. Cubitt to write down every occurrence of the men and give them to him Holmes later found out it was a code and cracked it. When he went to tell Cubitt, the man was shot and his wife was hit in the head. From the code, Holmes found out that a man named Abe Slaney was Cubitt's old lover and he had come to get her back. He was also a criminal and when he saw Cubitt, he shot him. At the end Slaney was arrested but escaped and Cubitt's wife spent the rest of her life alone.
